SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Division, the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has reached 1 MW of rooftop solar capacity under the flagship PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
This milestone has been complemented by the disbursement of Rs 1 crore in central subsidies to 110 domestic beneficiaries, further making solar energy both affordable and accessible. A KPDCL spokesperson highlighted the importance of these subsidies in empowering consumers to transition to renewable energy and reducing their reliance on conventional power sources.

Additionally, KPDCL announced an allocation of Rs 1 crore in Union Territory subsidies, enabling an extra Rs 9,000 subsidy for eligible beneficiaries installing solar plants up to 3 kWp. This subsidy will be credited directly to beneficiaries’ accounts, along with the existing central subsidy of up to Rs 85,800, ensuring a smooth process via the National PM Surya Ghar Portal. Subsidy disbursements have been completed within a week of commissioning solar plants, showcasing the efficiency of KPDCL’s technical teams.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MN&RE) has also cleared subsidy claims for 93 additional beneficiaries, with disbursements to be made shortly through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This brings the total number of solar-equipped rooftops to 249, reflecting a capacity of 1 MW.
On average, households are opting for larger installations, typically around 4 kWp, to maximise the financial and environmental advantages of solar energy. With 1407 consumers currently finalising agreements and installations underway, the scheme continues to witness growing interest.
KPDCL is now gearing up to release another rs 79 lakh in central subsidies and is working towards achieving its ambitious target of 3.5 MW installed rooftop solar capacity within the next two months. This effort underscores KPDCL’s commitment to accelerating renewable energy adoption and ensuring maximum benefit for consumers.
