The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, introduced the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, or Rooftop Solar Scheme, in the Interim Budget 2024-25. Officially launched on 15 February 2024, this initiative aims to provide free electricity up to 300 units per month to 1 crore households across India. Over 1.28 crore registrations have already been completed for this scheme.

Eligibility Criteria
- Indian residents belonging to poor and middle-income households.

Installation Process
- Solar panels are installed on rooftops to supply power directly to households.
- The scheme includes Net Metering, allowing surplus energy to be sold to electricity distribution companies.
- Subsidies are transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
