J&K Govt Yet to Recover Rs 400 Crore in Sales Tax from Dealers: JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has revealed that 2,527 dealers owe a cumulative Rs 409.31 crore in sales tax arrears under the Jammu and Kashmir General Sales Tax Act, 1962. This includes Rs 179.39 crore in outstanding tax, Rs 193.30 crore in interest, and Rs 36.62 crore in penalties.

The information was submitted in response to a question raised by R S Pathania, though it was not taken up for discussion due to House disruptions.The department stated that it is pursuing recovery of the dues under the Jammu and Kashmir General Sales Tax Act and the Jammu and Kashmir Land Revenue Act. A total of 3,556 notices have been issued, along with 790 attachment notices for immovable and movable properties and bank accounts. Further, 408 attachment orders and 762 warrants of arrest have been executed under the Land Revenue Act.
In addition to recovery proceedings, sales tax collections from petroleum products under the Jammu and Kashmir (Motor Spirit and Diesel Oil) (Taxation on Sales) Act, SVT 2005, stood at Rs 1,605.89 crore in 2023–24 and Rs 1,642.50 crore in 2024–25 up to date. Collections under the General Sales Tax Act for the same periods were Rs 3.83 crore and Rs 2.56 crore respectively.
The recovery process is being monitored at the divisional level by Additional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners for Recovery, and at the Union territory level by the Commissioner.
