“Ladakh: 28 Government Schools Without Students, 65 Operated by Single Teachers – Education Crisis Deepens” : SRINAGAR: At least 28 government-run schools in the Union Territory of Ladakh are functioning without student enrolment, official data has revealed. The UT is also facing a skewed Pupil Teacher Ratio (PTR), with 65 schools operating with only one teacher.

According to official documents, out of the total 841 government schools in Ladakh, 28 schools, including 20 primary and 8 upper primary, have zero enrolment.
“316 primary schools have fewer than 30 students, and two schools have fewer than 256 students enrolled. There are 65 single-teacher schools in the UT. Additionally, 23.1% of schools at the primary level have an adverse PTR,” the data states.
The Government of India has urged the UT administration to examine the causes of low enrolment and poor PTRs, and to take immediate corrective steps, including rationalisation of teacher deployment.
The documents further state that based on Ladakh’s proposals submitted over the years, a total of 48 schools were approved for skill education under Samagra Shiksha. Of these, the UT has implemented skill education in 40 schools, leaving 8 approved schools yet to be covered.
“Currently, school coverage for skill education stands at only 36.92%, implemented across eight sectors—Apparel, Agriculture, Beauty & Wellness, Electronics & Hardware, Healthcare, Retail, Information Technology, and Tourism & Hospitality,” the document reads.
The UT has been advised to expand the coverage of skill education by including more schools and students and introducing relevant sectors and job roles. (KNO)
