According to officials from the Meteorological Department, most areas in the region experienced rainfall during the last 24 hours, leading to a drop in temperatures. They said that significant weather activity is expected to continue between Friday and Saturday, after which the intensity will begin to reduce from June 1. The department has advised residents to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable areas, and has urged Shikara riders in Srinagar to avoid operating during periods of gusty winds.

Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, had earlier said that light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected at most places, with the possibility of heavy rain, intense showers, and gusty winds in some areas until May 31. From June 1 to June 3, brief spells of light rain and thundershowers may occur at isolated places, followed by generally dry weather from June 4 to 6, though brief afternoon showers cannot be ruled out.

The Meteorological Department has also issued an advisory highlighting the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds at scattered locations on May 30 and 31. The advisory includes warnings about potential landslides and mudslides in vulnerable areas and the risk of flash floods caused by intense showers. People have been advised to stay away from loose structures, electric poles, cables, and trees during this period of unstable weather.

Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng has also predicted unstable conditions in Jammu and Kashmir until Saturday. He said most areas are likely to experience thundershowers, strong winds, and isolated hailstorms, especially from Friday night into Saturday. According to Keng, persistent cloud cover will keep day temperatures well below seasonal averages, likely between 7 to 10 degrees Celsius lower. He further cautioned that intense showers may lead to flash floods in isolated locations, and that cloudbursts and cloud-to-ground lightning strikes cannot be ruled out. He also warned of possible landslides and shooting stones along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway due to heavy rainfall.

Keng added that thunderclouds are expected to develop over North Pakistan in the coming hours and will likely move eastward to affect most parts of Jammu and Kashmir within the next 24 hours. He said higher reaches above 3,400 metres could witness snowfall, and woollens may be needed in some lower areas due to the sharp dip in temperature. (With KNO Inputs)
