SRINAGAR: The intense heatwave continued across Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, with the Meteorological Department issuing ‘orange’ and ‘yellow’ alerts for the next six days. An isolated heatwave with gusty winds is expected to persist till June 19, except on June 17.

Hot and dry weather is likely to prevail over the next 24 hours, with temperatures remaining above normal in most parts of the region.
The department has issued an ‘orange’ alert for Saturday, while a ‘yellow’ alert remains in place for June 15, 16, 18 and 19.
Light rainfall in the late afternoon brought some relief from the ongoing heatwave in Srinagar and surrounding areas. Reports indicated that several areas in the city experienced light showers under cloudy skies, easing the day’s intense heat.
Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, said light rain and thundershowers, accompanied by gusty winds, are likely at isolated to scattered places from Saturday, June 16.
He added that dry and hot weather conditions are expected between June 17 and June 20. From June 21 to June 23, generally cloudy weather with intermittent rain and thundershowers is expected at many places.
In its advisory, the MeT Department warned of a heatwave at isolated to scattered places over the next two days. People have been advised to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak hours (12 noon to 4 pm). Farmers have been advised to continue agricultural operations as usual.
Maximum temperatures remained above normal on Thursday. Srinagar recorded 32.4°C, while Jammu city recorded 43.6°C. Qazigund recorded 32.8°C, Kokernag 31.8°C, and Gulmarg 23.0°C. In Pahalgam, the temperature stood at 28.2°C, while Kupwara recorded 31.9°C.
In the Jammu division, Katra recorded 39.5°C, while Banihal, Batote and Bhaderwah recorded 31.8°C, 31.6°C and 30.8°C, respectively. (KNO)
