SRINAGAR: The government on Thursday revealed that a crucial Rs 161.201 crore water supply project aimed at ensuring sustainable drinking water for Srinagar remains stalled due to a lack of funding.

The project, which proposes the laying, testing, and commissioning of a raw water main from Preng to Rangil, is yet to receive financial backing, leaving its execution date uncertain.
In response to a question tabled by MLA Batamaloo Tariq Hameed Karra in the Assembly, the government stated that while the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared, it has not yet been approved.
Additionally, only the Irrigation and Flood Control Department has granted clearance, with approvals from the Forest, Wildlife, Soil Conservation, and Environment Departments still pending.
With no funding mechanism in place, officials have refrained from providing a timeline for its execution.
The uncertainty surrounding the project has raised concerns over the government’s commitment to resolving Srinagar’s water crisis. Notably, the city has been facing a growing demand for water due to population increase and urban expansion.
“A project of this scale should not be stalled due to financial constraints. The government must explore all possible funding avenues, including central assistance,” said a Srinagar resident.
Tauseef Ahmad, another local, said that despite repeated assurances, successive governments have failed to prioritise Srinagar’s water security.
“Every summer, we face supply shortages, yet major infrastructure projects like this are indefinitely delayed due to funding issues,” said Irfan Rasool, a resident from downtown. (KNO)
