These moments showed the world that women are doing everything in their power to make a difference. These victories defined that women will not stop till there is equality in the country. Here’s a look at 2022 where we hope the world will be reshaping for the better.
Mother can decide the child’s surname (July 2022)
In July 2022, the country’s top court has given mothers the right to decide the surname of their children. “The mother, being the sole natural guardian of the child, has the right to decide the surname of the child,” the judgment said.
More medal events for women (August 2022)
The Commonwealth Games 2022 saw more medal events for women than for men. The Games were held in Birmingham, England. It was the first time that women’s cricket was included in the Games and the Indian team won the silver medal.
Mirabai Chanu, PV Sindhu, Anahat Singh, Nikhat Zareen and Priyanka Goswami were among the promising women athletes who have brought laurels to the country.
All-women Navy crew completes maritime surveillance mission (Aug 2022)
This year, an all-women team of the Navy created history by completing an Arabian Sea surveillance mission. They went through months of extensive training before the ‘historic sortie’.
Equal Rights (September 2022)
In September, the Supreme Court of India declared that every woman has the right to legal and safe abortion between 20 and 24 weeks of pregnancy. It does not matter whether the woman is married or not, she has the right to carry the pregnancy to term or not.
At the same time, the top court said that since a fetus develops inside a woman’s body, she has full autonomy to take decisions. It added, “We would be remiss not to recognize that intimate partner violence is a reality and can take the form of rape.”
Highest number of Supreme Court judges (September 2022)
Women judges have been a part of the Supreme Court. However, in September 2022, four women judges were selected to be a part of the apex court. The names of Justices BV Nagaratna, Indira Banerjee, Bela M Trivedi and Hima Kohli were included in the list.
Marital Rape is Rape (September 2022)
While Indian women are still fighting for a law to criminalize marital rape, the Supreme Court said, “marital rape is rape.” The statement was passed when the bench was hearing a plea by an unmarried woman who wanted to terminate her pregnancy beyond 20 to 24 weeks.
The court pointed to the reality that many women are victims of sexual abuse by their partners and end up with pregnancies. Clearing the air, the SC said that the definition of rape would also include marital rape. Therefore, married or unmarried women can get legal and safe abortions in the country.
BCCI announces equal pay for women cricketers (Oct 2022
One of the biggest wins for Indian women in 2022 was when BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced equal pay for women. Women and men cricketers will now earn equally.
Shah called it a step towards tackling gender discrimination in the country. In the past, several women cricketers have spoken openly on the issue of pay-parity. Supporting the announcement, Mithali Raj said, “This is a historic decision for women’s cricket in India.”
Women sailors join Indian Army for the first time (Dec 2022)
This year, the Indian Navy has inducted women sailors for the first time in its history. Of the 3,000 Agniveers, 341 were women.
“Come next year, we are looking at inducting women officers in all branches and not just 7-8 branches which are limited till date,” said Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar.
