Left Ronaldo behind after 90th minute
Ebappé, 23, scored in the 74th minute to equal Portugal’s Ronaldo’s record of eight World Cup goals. In the first minute of extra time he scored another goal to overtake Ronaldo and equalize Argentina captain Messi. Ebappé scored four goals in his first World Cup in 2018.
Scored first World Cup goal at the age of 19
France had won the World Cup title in Russia at that time. His first goal against Peru in that tournament made him, at the age of 19, the youngest French goalscorer in World Cup history. Mbappé has surpassed his tally of four goals in this World Cup from four years ago, taking him to the top of the leaderboard for the Golden Boot.
First French player to score four or more goals in the World Cup
Ebappé is also the first French player to score four or more goals in multiple World Cups. At 23 years and 349 days, he is also the youngest player since Brazilian legend Pelé (17 years 249 days in 1958) to score five goals in the World Cup knockout stages. Ebappé opened his account with a goal in the first group match against Australia in Qatar. Germany’s Miroslav Klose holds the record for the most goals scored in the World Cup. He played in four World Cups and scored 16 goals in 24 matches.
