The unseasonal spike, particularly expected on Thursday and Friday, may set new records for the Valley, traditionally known for its cooler spring climate. Officials have described the pattern as highly atypical for this time of year.
“This is not typical weather for May in Kashmir. The temperatures we are expecting in the coming days are more characteristic of peak summer in July,” a senior official from the Meteorological Centre Srinagar said. The weather office has issued a comprehensive advisory covering the period May 21 to 31, warning of generally hot and dry conditions across the Union Territory. From May 21 to 26, only brief light rain is expected at isolated locations during the late afternoon, with more scattered thundershowers anticipated between May 27 and 31.
The forecast suggests a 1-2°C rise in Kashmir’s maximum temperatures till May 23, with scattered heatwave conditions, followed by a slight dip. In Jammu division, a 2-3°C rise is expected till May 26, with heatwave-like conditions likely to persist.Authorities have warned of heat stress risks, especially for children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
