Kashmir’s Banker Couple Among Nine Dead During Hajj

SRINAGAR: In a tragic turn of events during the Hajj pilgrimage of 2024, nine individuals from Kashmir have been reported dead. Among the deceased are two Kashmir bankers, Manzoor Ahmad Rangrez and his wife, Rifat. The couple were residents of Rawalpora.

Jammu and Kashmir Haj Committee confirmed their demise. Right now, two Jammu and Kashmir pilgrims are missing.

Manzoor Ahmad Rangrez, a retired bank officer aged 62, and his wife Rifat, aged 57, who was currently serving at the Nowgam branch, tragically lost their lives during the sacred pilgrimage. They had been missing since the 9th of Zilhaj, a period marked by intense religious activities and extreme climatic conditions. It has been confirmed that the cause of their deaths was heatstroke, a risk that is heightened during the peak summer months in Saudi Arabia.

Their two sons survive the couple. The news of their passing has sent shockwaves through their neighbourhood in Rawalpora, where they were known for their dedication and service.

Reports suggest that the host managers of the Hajj, and the Saudi government have not been responsive to the situation to which the tens of thousands of pilgrims were subjected. There were issues of transportation and health care that complicated the crisis, pilgrims said on the phone. Some videos circulating on social media tell a story of complete neglect and near failure.
