The sighting was documented by wildlife explorer Maqbool Hussain Moqudasi, known for tracking elusive species in the region.

Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, praised the Wildlife Department and Moqudasi for the documentation. Dr Akhoon said that of the estimated 477 snow leopards in Ladakh, 127 are found in Kargil, reflecting the region’s largely undisturbed ecosystem.“This sighting is not only a breakthrough in wildlife documentation but also an opportunity for eco-tourism and local employment,” Dr Akhoon said.Suru Valley, which was recently named among National Geographic’s Top 25 Global Destinations, is now emerging as a location for sustainable wildlife tourism. With this latest development, the valley’s relevance as a biodiversity site is expected to grow.Moqudasi described the moment as important for Suru Valley and emphasised the need to promote responsible tourism to preserve the area’s natural environment.

Wildlife experts believe the sighting could attract researchers, nature photographers, and eco-tourists from across the world, positioning Kargil as a point of interest in global conservation efforts. (KNO)
