Rohit Sharma:India captain Rohit Sharma was visibly frustrated after fellow opener KL Rahul lost his wicket

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was left dejected after losing his wicket to a shot by fellow opener KL Rahul at the end of the first day of the first Test against Australia at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur.

After bowling out Australia for 177 runs in the first innings, India finished 77/1 on the first day of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar series.

With India reaching 76/0 at the end of 22 overs, the day looked set to end with all the wickets in hand for the hosts.  However, debutant Todd Murphy had other plans as he bowled a flicked delivery straight at Rahul’s bowler around the wicket to take his first Test wicket of his career.

Rahul scored 20 runs off 71 balls with 1 four at a strike rate of 28.16.  Rohit, the pacemaker in India’s opening partnership, was taken aback by Rahul’s shot selection, too late in the day.  After Rahul’s dismissal, India appointed Ravichandran Ashwin as the night watchman to watch during the day.

Before Rahul’s wicket fell, India were in a very dominant position and Rohit notched up his 15th Test half-century in short order.  The Indian captain scored a half-century off 66 balls with 8 fours and a six.

After Cummins won the toss and elected to bat, the quick wickets of David Warner and Usman Khawaja saw Mohammad Shami and Mohammad Siraj collapse the Australians.  After lunch, Ravindra Jadeja surprised Australia – their dressing room was buzzing at lunch after witnessing India’s 32-over attack.  But within two balls, Jadeja turned the hosts around.

First, Jadeja cleverly bowled a slow ball from his crease to Marnus Labuschagne, KS Bharat completed the stumping and then he LBWed Matt Renshaw to send Australia back.  Steve Smith has always been the biggest thorn in India’s side, but Jadeja has taken care of that too with outstanding turns.

Ravichandran Ashwin then took Australia further ahead by dismissing Alex Carey and Cummins.  Debutant Todd Murphy then fell to Jadeja, who dismissed the 22-year-old without opening his account before dismissing Peter Handscomb to make it five.  After that, Ashwin dismissed fast bowler Scott Boland and Australia were bowled out for 177 runs in 63.5 overs.
