SRINAGAR: In response to an intense and unrelenting heatwave, the Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday announced early summer vacations for all government and recognised private schools across the Kashmir division. The decision, officials said, is aimed at ensuring the well-being and safety of students.

Education Minister Sakina Itoo said the schools will remain closed from June 23 to July 7, adding that the government had originally planned the vacation from July 1 to July 10. “The weather conditions in the Kashmir region are unbearable for the students and, given the severe heatwave, we have decided to announce early summer vacation,” she said.
The minister noted that the break will now span 15 days, and the situation will be reviewed after the vacation ends. “We will assess the weather after July 7 and take a call on whether to extend the holiday if required,” she said.
Confirming the timeline, a senior official in the education department told JKNS that schools are scheduled to reopen on July 8, and an official order will be issued shortly. “This decision was taken purely in the interest of children and staff,” the official said.
Earlier in the day, Itoo had also revised the school timings in light of the heatwave. As per the updated schedule, schools within the Srinagar municipal limits will now operate from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, while those outside these limits will function from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM, until the summer vacation begins.
The announcement was widely welcomed by parents and teachers, who said the extreme heat had made regular school attendance increasingly difficult for children.source kashmir life
