T20 World Cup 2022: Australia hopes alive after victory over Afghanistan

T20 World Cup 2022: Australia hopes alive after victory over Afghanistan

T20 World Cup 2022: Australia moved to second place in Group 1 points table behind New Zealand with 7 points but their net run rate is still very low.

New Delhi: T20 World Cup 2021 winners Australia seem to be struggling in this tournament.  Australia suffered a heavy loss by 89 runs at the hands of New Zealand and this is where their troubles started to mount as their net run rate went to minus.  However, Australia won the match against Afghanistan and kept their hopes alive for the semi-finals.

Australia have moved up to second in the Group 1 points table, 7 points behind New Zealand, but their net run rate is still very low.  Australia’s NRR is -0.173 and despite having 7 points it has become a concern for them.  Had Australia beaten Afghanistan by a bigger margin instead of 4 runs, their hopes of reaching the semi-finals could have been strengthened.  New Zealand’s net run rate is quite good.  He has 7 points and a net run rate of +2.113.

Now the patch can get stuck here.

Australia’s semi-final hopes will now rest on Saturday’s match between England and Sri Lanka.  England are third on the points table with 5 points and a net run rate of +0.547.  If England win this match, they can book a semi-final ticket on the basis of net run rate.  So Australia will have to hope that Sri Lanka beat England.

Sri Lanka can spoil England’s game.

This will prevent Sri Lanka from reaching the semi-finals as they only have 4 points, but will spoil England’s game.  Thus Australia will go into the semi final with 7 points but if England win they will go into the semi final with their net run rate as their current net run rate is much better.  Although it will not be easy for Sri Lanka to beat England, anything is possible in cricket.  In such a situation, Australia would have started praying for Sri Lanka’s victory.

A narrow win for Australia keeps their net run rate in the negative! 👀

If England beat Sri Lanka tomorrow, the hosts would miss a semi-final spot 😯#T20WorldCup 2022 Standings 👉 https://t.co/cjmWWRz68E#AUSvAFG pic.twitter.com/qCPzYznAz9
