The funds have been allocated to the Assistant Directors of Handicrafts and Handloom in Anantnag, Budgam, Baramulla, Kulgam, and Srinagar, enabling the first phase of the scheme’s implementation. The financial release is aimed at enhancing the infrastructure and training capacity necessary to support the development of endangered traditional crafts.

Launched in 2021, the Karkhandar Scheme is a flagship initiative of the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom to revive declining crafts such as pottery, walnut wood carving, silver filigree, carpet weaving, Kani shawl weaving, Khatambandpapier-mâché, Sozni, tapestry, and engraved copperware — many of which face an acute shortage of skilled artisans.

A departmental spokesperson highlighted that the scheme facilitates structured skill transfer from master artisans — including National, State, and Shilp Guru awardees — to the younger generation. Trainees from departmental training centres are provided with advanced, six-month hands-on training in nearby karkhanas (workshops), along with a monthly stipend of Rs 2,000 disbursed via direct bank transfer.

In addition, the karkhandars receive Rs 25,000 in two instalments to cover tools, raw materials, and logistics, with an added Rs 2,000 per trainee per month to further support the training process.source Kashmir life
