SRINAGAR: The New Year 2025 has begun with a rainfall deficit, as Jammu and Kashmir has recorded a 59 percent shortfall in precipitation during the first week of January.

According to details from January 1 to January 8, JK has recorded a 59 percent deficit in rainfall despite recent snowfall in most parts of the Valley. Against the normal rainfall of 18.4 mm, J&K has recorded only 7.6 mm of precipitation.

Nine stations across J&K, including the winter capital of the Union Territory, Jammu, recorded significant rainfall deficits, ranging from 60 percent to 99 percent.

However, four stations, including Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded normal precipitation during the same period. Budgam and Ganderbal stations in central Kashmir reported large excess rainfall from January 1 to January 8.

Meanwhile, the local Meteorological Department (MeT) has issued a yellow warning, indicating the possibility of an isolated cold wave until January 10.

Amid the forecast of an isolated cold wave, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of MeT, said that generally dry weather conditions and cloudiness are expected on the evening and night of January 10.

On January 11, Dr Ahmad added that generally cloudy weather is expected, with the possibility of light rain in the plains of Jammu and snow at isolated higher reaches of both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions.

From January 12 to 14, the weather will remain generally dry, he said, adding that on January 15 and 16, generally cloudy weather is expected, with light snow possible at isolated to scattered places.
