Srinagar, June 23: In a landmark move aimed at boosting connectivity and infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, the Central Government has approved 19 mega road and tunnel projects worth ₹10,637 crore for the Union Territory. The announcement was warmly welcomed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), LG Manoj Sinha wrote:

“Extremely grateful to Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari Ji for approving 19 mega road and tunnel projects for J&K worth ₹10,637 crore.”

Key Projects Approved

The list of sanctioned projects includes several strategically and economically important constructions:

  • Peer Ki Gali Tunnel
  • Sadhana Tunnel
  • Zaznar-Shopian section of NH-701A
  • Four-lane flyover from Lal Chowk to Parimpora
  • Trehgam-Chamkote section of NH-701
  • Four-lane Magam Flyover on Narbal–Gulmarg section
  • Qazigund Bypass

These projects are expected to significantly enhance both intra-regional and inter-regional connectivity within Jammu and Kashmir.

Infrastructure Boost with Strategic Impact

LG Sinha emphasized that many of the approved projects are of strategic importance, particularly in supporting logistical operations and troop movement in sensitive regions. The new tunnels will ensure all-weather connectivity, especially in snowbound areas, reducing travel time and improving safety for commuters.

“These projects will improve infrastructure in J&K, connect various tourist destinations, and play a major role in the region’s economic development,” the LG said.

Economic Growth & Tourism Potential

With improved road and tunnel infrastructure, the tourism sector is also expected to witness a boost. Regions such as Gulmarg, Shopian, and Peer Ki Gali, which are popular among tourists, will benefit from faster, safer, and more reliable access.

Moreover, the construction of bypasses and flyovers in urban zones like Srinagar is set to decongest traffic, improve urban mobility, and enhance quality of life for residents.

Why It Matters

The central government’s investment of over ₹10,000 crore reaffirms its commitment to developing Jammu and Kashmir’s core infrastructure. Beyond connectivity, these projects are anticipated to:

  • Create thousands of job opportunities during the construction phase
  • Attract private investment in tourism, logistics, and trade
  • Improve border area development and regional integration
  • Enhance national security in critical sectors

Final Word

This historic infrastructure push is seen as a major step toward transforming Jammu and Kashmir into a hub of connectivity, commerce, and tourism. With strong backing from the Centre and continuous monitoring by the UT administration, these 19 projects mark a turning point for J&K’s developmental journey.
