The fire broke out at Hotel Sounsar and quickly spread to other hotels and shops in the Sonamarg market, resulting in significant losses.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he was in constant touch with the local administration to ensure all possible assistance.

“Deeply saddened by the devastating fire incident in the Sonmarg market. My office is in constant touch with the local administration to ensure all possible assistance reaches those in need. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families and businesses. In this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with you and will do everything possible to support your recovery,” Abdullah posted on X.

Locals and traders at Sonamarg market expressed frustration, alleging that the fire tenders reached the spot too late and criticised the authorities for failing to establish a fire services station in the area.

A hotel owner said that for the past decade, they have been demanding a fire services station at Sonamarg, but despite repeated assurances, no concrete action has been taken. He said that several major fire incidents in the past could have resulted in lesser damage if fire tenders had been readily available. (KNO)
